The Inn of the 41st Happiness

I wanted to show you just how much our new house has progressed.  By the way, the title is a play on a movie made in 1958 with Ingrid Bergman called The Inn of the Sixth Happiness.  Apparently a true story of a woman in China during the war. You will have to google this if you want to know more. the 41th happiness is becuase we have 41 babies.  Thank you Siew for the reference.

It has an enormous amount of work and so many volunteers have helped.  I am so indebted to them for all their time, effort and dedication and for the countless hours they donated.  At the top of the list is Josh Lee, who came and offered his free professional help for five weeks and which turned into so much longer.  I am so extremely grateful to him because he really made my life so much easier.  Tenacity in the face of all opposition is a very admirable quality, Josh.  Hand in hand with all the volunteers, we received donations that made so many of the projects possible.  Thank you so much for the ability I had to make some chooses that allowed us some much needed extras. My grateful thanks to the landlords who remained true to their word about the many improvements they agreed to make.  Thank you to Paul Chu and his work crew for working so hard on this project.

We are so grateful for all the donations large and small. It made a building into a home for the babies.  We have already gotten interest from a magazine to come and take pictures and the national TV show from Shaanxi has filmed a 30 minute program about the new place and Starfish in general.  The interview was done in English and they will post it on the web.  I will be interested to see what the final result is because we taped for about 2 hours.

We moved last Friday and Saturday and at the moving was the easy part.  The reorganization is going to take weeks.  Right now, we have 12 volunteers who are working full time to help and many other volunteers who have come to add their time and efforts.

Thank you to one and all for all your help and support.

The whole house is not completely finished yet, but this will give you a great idea where we are, with some additional photos later when we are finished with everything. Thank you to Cindy who made this slideshow of all the pictures.
The Innkeeper of the 41th happiness,
Amanda

Update on Jian (Cailean), Adoption 25 Holland

Dear Amanda,

One year ago, we arrived in Xi'An. We were so excited and nervous! In one day we would finally meet our son Jian (Cailean).
And now, one year later, it's like Jian has  always been a member of our family.
He is such a happy child, he's got a lot of energy, sometimes a little bit too much! It is just like you said: Jian is easily happy and easily angry!
Luckily most of the time, he shows his happy side.
He is such a hugger, he shows his affection all the time. We are so proud of him and David and Anne-Mei.
They all three do play and fight together, just like other brothers and sisters do.
I guess you can say, we are one happy family!
We feel so blessed that we could adopt Jian.
We are so grateful to you and all the other people at Starfish. It is amazing how much the children are loved and cared for.
We will never forget what you have done for Jian and we sure will come back sometime!
You know how special it was to us, having you here in Holland. The fact that you joined the baptism of Jian was unbelievable.

We had a great year together. We went to Spain in summer. Jian loved it! He was in the swimming pool all the time, liked the Spanish food
(well, actually he likes any kind of food! Thank you!) Everybody adores him, of course!
In one year he made so much progress; his Dutch is amazing, he reached almost the same level as other children of his age.
He loves to draw and play games but he also loves to play outside, on the slide or the trampoline.
He is afraid of nothing and wants to try everything.
In September Jian started at pre-school. One morning and one afternoon per week, he is going to school.
He is very fond of the teachers and the other children.
But he is totally happy when we come back to pick him up! So that's a very good sign!

Well, we'll keep you informed about all of us and hope to meet you again! In Holland or in China, we'll see!
You know, you're always welcome!

Love and a big hug from the Ocheda-family,

Jian, Anne-Mei, David, Valentin and Hanneke

Hello from Ohio: Charlie (Gabriel) Adoption 14

Dear Amanda,

Cold, snowy greetings from Ohio.  We are way overdue for an update, apologies.  Charlie (Gabriel) is thriving and doing well.  His speech has progressed remarkably well and he’s growing like a weed. He’s going to afternoon Pre-K five days a week and is enjoying it.  Recently he’s joined sister Esme and has begun Taekwondo classes.  Nothing like 30 minutes where you are allowed to punch and kick.
We had a great summer just hanging out at home and walking in the woods.  We lost our old Newfoundland dog Nellie to cancer this fall and after a couple weeks with just two dogs we found a St Bernard/Newfoundland mix at a shelter and she’s moved in with us.  And then we found an injured stray kitty in the barn that Esme has nursed back to health.  So we have a houseful.
The older kids, now almost 16, are attending a boarding school in Hudson, Ohio, about an hour from home.  We miss them dearly when they are at school but no danger of empty nest syndrome with Esme and Charlie keeping us busy.
Charlie is a strong little guy, sometimes a little willful but what four year old isn’t.  He loves Mom dearly but he seems to be our first child who is a real Daddy’s boy.   Esme says it’s because Daddy lets them have candy and stay up late.   Do I really do that???
We’re so excited about the new Starfish home and can understand how it must be frustrating not being able to move in yet.  The construction pictures where incredible.  We will be undertaking a much smaller construction project ourselves this next summer when we add on space so that Charlie has his own room.   He’s still in a bed on the other side of Karen and my bedroom which has worked well but he’s excited about having his own room and space.
We often talk about you and the nannies and wonder how everyone is doing,  and marvel over how things have changed and grown at Starfish.

All our Love,
Steve, Karen, Henry, Lucy, Esme and Charlie

Norma Xi'an (Erica), "Xi Xi" Adoption 18: New York

Our very own Norma Xi'an (Erica) -- whose nickname is Xi'Xi-- has been chosen to be the poster child in New York City with YAI Network spokesperson Sherri Shepherd of ABC’s “The View”.  YAI is an organization that helps people with disabilities and is the agency that operates Xi'Xi's  school. Xi'Xi  will be doing her duties for the whole year.  There will be materials posted all over New York City as they gear up for their Central Park Challenge campaign on June 4th where they walk and run in order to change the lives of people with disabilities!

http://www.yai.org/

Xi'Xi has such a winning personality and I just loved watching her when I was in New York in the summer. She charms every one she meets. There were these gorgeous stain glass windows in their home and in the mornings Xi'Xi would chase the "rainbows" that the sun made when it shone through in the morning.  At that time, she also discovered her grandma's earrings. She was just too cute, wanting to wear them all day long. The girl can accessorize!!

She is now walking without a walker and her gait so cute to watch, because she looks like a drunken sailor with an element of Charlie Chaplin in there.  I know how hard she worked to get to this point and I am so proud of her hard work. She has a Chinese housekeeper from Shanghai, who speaks Mandarin and Spanish with some English,   so Xi'Xi has been able to keep up her Chinese. I hear she is quite conversational and we will wait to hear the Spanish with a Chinese accent. The girl has the three most important languages in New York covered.

So the song holds true about Xi'Xi in New York:  If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

Life, love and laughter,
Amanda

Adoption 51: Jadelyn (Nadia), Our So. CAL Babe

Jadelyn (Nadia) was adopted to Southern California in mid December and this is an update from her family.  I have not written about the adoption yet. I am behind in that department.  Thank you Mark.

Hi Amanda!

It's been a whirlwind since we arrive home on Christmas eve.  I'm sorry for not getting an update out to you sooner, but the holidays hit us on top of returning home with a new family member who needs lots of love and attention.

Jadelyn is doing so well and we are enjoying her thoroughly.  I have given Xiao Lu a few updates and have told her whenever she would like to set up a
Skype session, just let us know. We don't want her to worry about your English... she can speak to Zao in Chinese and we'll communicate as much as we can in English.  I'm sure she would like that.

We have been having lots of fun with Jadie.  She is getting more comfortable with us everyday and becoming more relaxed.  We had some struggles in China with her eating (as you know) but she has learned to sit in her high chair through the entire meal and eats most everything we put in front of her.  We assumed that restaurants would be off limits for at least a year and had visions of dealing with temper tantrums or screaming fits during meals. But we're happy to report this is not the case. We even went to a nice restaurant for Debbie's birthday this week and she was very well behaved for
the entire meal (until Jake started making silly faces to make her scream with laughter at the table).  She did a great job.  She loves pizza, noodles,
Mexican food and just about anything spicy.  She won't eat eggs in the morning without salsa on them.
Nap times and bed times have been difficult at times with some crying and screaming.  She's getting better and tonight I gave her a bottle, and put
her down without one tear or whimper.  She said "wo ai ni" and blew me kisses and went right to sleep... Very precious.  She's sleeps through the night without any problem and seems to be adjusting well to US time and a new schedule.

She is very friendly to most everyone she meets, waving and saying "Hi". She also likes to wave goodbye, say "bye bye", and blow kisses.  This melts the hearts of just about everyone she meets.  We have had many people  comment on how beautiful she is. We heartily agree when we hear this. She is learning more English and seems to understand almost everything we say. When we ask her to do something in English, she will typically do it right away.  I am still using some Chinese and English when I speak to her (usually if I have to ask her to do something twice). Sometimes I know she understands but is choosing to ignore me... We have been working with her on this and she becomes more obedient everyday it seems.

We still call her "Zao Zao" most of the time.  We also call her "Jadie" or"Jadie Zao" so she continues to hear her name.  I love her Chinese name and
want to continue to use it as a family nick-name. We took her to our pediatrician last week to have her checked out and get the referral for our Cardiac surgeon at CHOC hospital in Orange County, CA. The doctor said she looks really good and has given us a date of 1/20 to meet with the cardiologist at CHOC.

We shared the Christmas story with Jadie and she liked hearing about the birth of baby Jesus.  We have some small figures of the Nativity Scene and
she likes to play with these.

Jadie is learning so much right now.  She is a little "sponge" just soaking everything up.  I'm so glad we were able bring  her home before Christmas
and that she didn't have to go through the trauma of another move at the Starfish home.  She loved the home and all of her friends and caregivers,
but with most of her friends already gone, the timing seemed to be perfect. Thank you again Amanda for loving and caring for our daughter so well.

Keep us posted on the move and all that's ahead.

Thanks again,

Mark

Adoption 43: Joseph to Sweden

On January 19th, 2009 we brought three babies home,  Justin, Josie and Joseph.  We affectionately called it our J day.  All the babies names started with J's and it was not planned.  Joseph was three months old and had a wide cleft lip (CL/CP).  From the beginning he did well and I could see why he survived the orphanage:  He could suck well. That innate ability that every one should have, turns out to be a huge problem for cleft palate babies. I know from personal experience just how much work it is to feed CL/CP and if you are in the orphanage you cannot get that much personal attention.

Joseph grew so well but always remained a little guy.  He was in the first group of babies to get his NAM.  We were often in the taxi together going to the dentist and so I had time to take pictures of him.  So the taxi is my favorite studio.  He developed the cutest way of crawling and would scoot on his bum and did not crawl on his hands and knees. He showed great athletic ability and became a great climber.  He was also one of the babies on the 55 hour trip on the train when we went to Hangzhou and got stuck in the floods which made out 22 hour train trip into a marathon ride.

One day the call came from the orphanage Joseph was being adopted.  We had no idea where he was going.  The day of  the adoption we found out that his mom and dad were from Sweden and he was to be the first .  So Joseph's new name became Milo and he joined Tim (Bryan at Starfish) who is already there. From what I hear he is doing well and has adjusted to his new life.

Life, love and laughter,
Amanda

We currently have 42 babies under the age of 3.  Preparing to move to our new "castle"soon.
