STARFISH BABIES!!

Here is such good news from China.  The Yulin orphanage brought Coco to us a few days before her second birthday. She has so developmentally delayed because she had so may special needs.  TOF( four specific problems with the heart that can go from getting repaired in one surgery to needing four surgeries),anal atresia (the stomach is not connected to the anal passage and it takes two surgeries if not more to repair), and a radius missing, a bone in your forearm which makes you hand stand at a weird angle.

She could not do anything, but boy did she learn fast.  In the first week she learned how to hold her bottle, with her hand and all.  We found out that in spite of the strange angle she was able to use her hand very well.  She turned out to be so smart.  She was so observant and through watching others her skills improved so much.  One area that was lagging behind was her eating kills.  She did not know what to do with food.  She could eat when you fed her but she was unable to feed herself or eat anything you put in her mouth.  She just sat there, not knowing what do do with solid food.  This started changing when we moved her out of the baby room to the toddler room.  I think she just watched the others and learned.

She captured so many people's hearts. Love can heal so many issues and I think Coco just became the sweetest little thing.  She is so willing to share her toys and food with her fellow Starfishes.  After many tries and much waiting a family from the US finally got to sign the paperwork and be matched with her. They sound to be the perfect match.  I am so happy about this.

This morning I got video that Coco finally is walking independently. I would like to share this with you.  Coco will be three at the end of the month and she has finally conquered this gross motor skill.  I am so proud of her!!!  She is one of those children who can teach you about being tenacious.

I loved looking at her determined little face in the video:

At Starfish, we have taken care of 168 children to date, arranged more than 200 surgeries and had 76 international adoptions, so our little starfishes live all over the globe: the US, Netherlands, Norway, France, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Canada, Australia and in China. Our latest adoptions were Lexie, Joy, and Jack, who have all gone to their families in the United States. Currently we have Charlotte, Coco, Mila, and Ethan matched and waiting for their families.  There are 5 babies whose papers have been sent to the CCCWA.  Amanda is presently in Nashville, TN, USA receiving treatment for cancer but keeping a close eye on her Starfish babies.

Oh, so sweet!!! Good job, Coco! It is wonderful to see how the kids are doing at Starfish and share in their accomplishments and daily life. Will we see more? Maybe Megan...? :)
